Formula and Logic

This calculator uses widely accepted emission factors from the EPA and IPCC for approximate per capita carbon footprint estimation. The total per capita emissions are the sum of four categories:

  1. Household Energy: (Electricity consumption in kWh * 0.0007 tCO2e/kWh + Natural gas consumption in therms * 0.0053 tCO2e/therm) divided by household size. Electricity factors reflect the average US grid mix; natural gas factors account for combustion emissions only.
  2. Transportation: (Annual driving distance converted to km / 100 * fuel efficiency in L/100km * 0.0023 tCO2e/L) + (Air travel distance converted to km * 0.00032 tCO2e/km). Driving emissions assume gasoline-powered vehicles; air travel factors include radiative forcing impacts.
  3. Diet: Fixed annual values per person based on diet type: Vegan (1.5 tCO2e), Vegetarian (2.5 tCO2e), Pescatarian (3.5 tCO2e), Omnivore (4.5 tCO2e), Heavy Meat Eater (6.5 tCO2e). These values reflect lifecycle emissions from food production, processing, and transport.
  4. Waste: Fixed annual values per person based on recycling rate: 0-20% (0.8 tCO2e), 21-40% (0.6 tCO2e), 41-60% (0.4 tCO2e), 61-80% (0.2 tCO2e), 81-100% (0.1 tCO2e). These values account for methane emissions from landfills and savings from recycling.
